The Quilt Index

With NEH support, AQSG has digitized the abstracts for all articles from its journal Uncoverings and worked with Quilt Index staff to develop a plan and budget for future inclusion of the journal in the Quilt Index.

The American Quilt Study Group establishes, sustains, and promotes the highest standards for quilt-related studies. We stimulate, nurture, and affirm engagement in quilt studies and provide opportunities for its dissemination. The American Quilt Study Group is a non-profit quilt research organization with over 1,000 members in the U.S. and abroad. Members of the American Quilt Study Group participate in the effort to preserve quilt heritage through our various publications, yearly seminar and membership contacts. Membership is comprised of traditional and contemporary quilt artists, quilt lovers, historians, researchers, collectors, dealers, folklorists, authors, museum curators, quilt appraisers, and students of women's studies. Sally Garoutte founded the organization in Mill Valley, California, in 1980. What began as a small group gathered around Sally's kitchen table has grown into a unique and highly respected international organization.

AQSG publishes an annual journal of the papers presented at our seminar. Each issue of Uncoverings features essays that represent the most recent advances in quilt and related research. Featured papers have covered areas such as cultural roles associated with quilting and quilters, period analysis of quilting, and studies on quilt media. Each softbound volume includes both color and black and white illustrations. Since 1980, Uncoverings has been the foremost authority in quilt research. This interdisciplinary volume represents AQSG's mission: to build an accurate, well-respected body of quilt-related research. Uncoverings is the foundation of most quilt research being published today.
