The success of the 1933 Sears quilt contest encouraged the company to offer an expanded needlework contest in 1935--The Make It Yourself contest. Over 47,000 people entered including Alice Trapp who won a $5.00 fifth prze in her regional contest. Alice later sold the pattern to Mountain Mist, a quilt batting maker that also offered quilt patterns. Alice's skill with the needle helped to support her family during the Depression. She made 46 quilts and sold 39 of them. Alice notes "paid for my first baby with a quilt."
