Judy Becker started making quilts in 1972 after being inspired by the groundbreaking quilt show at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The repetitive block is the most traditional design element seen in Becker's work, and also the most frequent. The inherent spontaneity of the medium is one of the qualities that attracted her to both art quiltmaking and jazz music. Indeed, jazz music and quiltmaking have much in common: they are both improvisation art forms, which piece together new identities out of improbable parts, and both are American traditions.
