Essay:

This combination ralli has the characteristic small Cholistan appliqué squares. There is a great deal of visual movement in this pattern with the illusion that the blocks are set on angle which is not true. Color is added to the white appliqué shapes by putting small pieces of colored fabric under the cutouts of the appliqué. This technique is used in both the appliqué blocks and in the borders. The stitching is done in various colors of thread. The rubbing of the red color onto the white fabric is very common in rallis. The red dyes available to the village women are not of high quality and can become fugitive with just a little moisture. The back is a commercially printed fabric that is used as a woman’s head shawl particularly in the farming communities.
