Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:
This Hour Glass quilt is dated circa 1845. There are wonderful examples of fabric from this period including Prussian blue, pinks, rainbow prints, browns and blues. With the invention of the roller press, fabric printers experimented with dye. By gradually shading the colors on the roller, they could obtain a rainbow of different colors or different intensities in the fabric. Prussian blue dye was introduced in the U.S. in 1832. It was often printed with a drab tan and combined with other colors. This quilt contains a variety of rainbow prints and Prussian blue. Even more surprising is the fabric on the back, which is a loosely woven cheater print. Cheater fabric dates all the way back to the second quarter of the 19th century.
