Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:

This quilt was probably originally green, red and cheddar. Synthetic greens appeared in quilts around 1875. The dyes were often not reliable, fading to a brownish tan color when exposed to light and washing. This is a good indicator of quilts from the last quarter of the 19th century. The fading of the green is evident by the dark green thread used for the appliqué in the stems and leaves. Also, during this time period, quilts generally show lower levels of hand workmanship. Quilting became sparser with fewer lines per square foot and larger stitches due to thicker batting. This is the case in this quilt in which there is only quilting around the appliqués. This quilt is dated circa 1880.
