Essay:

This quilt is a memorial to thevictims of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on April 19, 1995. 168 people died and more than 800 were injured. The quilt is laid out as American flag. Each red block has the name of one bombing victim and the agency they worked for. The blocks are detailed below, working from top to bottom and left to right on the quilt.

Memorial to victims of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on April 19, 1995. 168 people died and more than 800 were injured. Quilt laid out as American flag, upper left corner “stars” area, 57” x 59”, blue fabric with stars, stuffed applique tree limb in brown fabric with 21 pink 3-dimensonal blossoms sewn on branches. Machine appliquéd bird, 13” tall with two actual brown feathers (10 ½” and 11 ½”) attached. Green plastic fabric branch with four leaves (branch 13”, stuffed leaves 5 ½” - 7” long, 3”-5” wide), machine appliquéd. 8 plastic grapes glued on, of which one remains. Three borders, stuffed with polyester, left and right side of “stars” area. From outer edge, 6” blue star fabric, 5 1/2” teal, 3” yellow. 2 ½” teal border (not stuffed) at bottom of “stars” area, not stuffed, and 1 ½” star fabric and 2 ½” teal fabric border at top of “stars” area. Thirteen stripes in “stripes” area of quilt, 6 white stripes, 11” tall, of white fabric with overall print of Pledge of Allegiance wording, alternating with seven stripes, 11” tall, comprised of red blocks (single or double) alternating with white Pledge of Allegiance fabric. Row 7-block 5: Red background with three machine pieced block inserts: 2 ½ “ x 2 ½” blocks with houses upper left and right corners; 2 ½” x 4” block in center with quilt representation top and bottom, machine pieced, with machine embroidered “TED ALLEN HUD” in center. Row 7-block 6: Background white fabric with small red floral print, hand appliqué branch with leaves and flowers covering entire block, machine embroidered “Saundra Avery Social Security Adm.” lower left corner.
