Essay:

This textile of embroidered squares was made by women of the Intuthuko Project, a women's upliftment project, of Etwatwa,
South Africa. Each of the panels depicts a different makarapa, the plastic helmet that is worn in support of soccer teams.This piece was made to celebrate South Africa's hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer Tournament.

This textile of embroidered squares was made by the women in the Intuthuko Project (a women's upliftment project) of Etwatwa (located east of Johannesburg) in the Gauteng Province. Each of the panels on this textile depict a different makarapa (the name of the plastic helmet that is sculpted and decorated and worn in support of soccer teams). This piece was made to celebrate South Africa's hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer Tournament. The Inthuthoko Project is one of two projects that were involved in making the Journey to Freedom textiles included in the MSU Museum exhibits Weaving of War: Fabrics of Memory and Quilts and Human Rights.
