Biography of the quiltmaker?
Sarah Ann Carpenter was born into slavery on February 7, 1861 in Elba, Alabama. Her mother was Mary Carpenter and her father was a white planter. Sarah Ann married Samuel Simmons in 1880 in Coffee County, Alabama; they had thirteen children. The Simmons family were farmers who owned their own land.
