Essay:
"I define this work as an art quilt, first by its basic construction of three sewn layers, secondly by its link to contemporary artistic exploration. Quilting is my chosen vehicle of expression. I find fabric lends itself to many techniques and manipulations. It can be delicate, fluid, bright or bold. Not only can paint, dye, print or thread be applied to the surface, but there is also great potential for textural play. For this piece, the dyed, appliqued top was sandwiched with wool felt and a backing layer, and then machine quilted. Once the quilting was done, I washed it and dried it in the dryer allowing the shrinkage to create and interesting texture. Final touches of hand embroidery were added to complete the quiltlet. These effects could not have been achieved in a different medium. It is the range of possibility in fiber art that inspires my creative process."
