Essay:
"While this piece satisfies all the requirements of a quilt - three layers of cloth connected by stitch - it is also a form of painting. The difference is, I use cheesecloth as my pigment, white glue as my medium, and 'paint' portraits spreading wet fibers of cheesecloth across a temporary substrate. When dry, I peel the cheesecloth off and stitch it to a fabric background with free motion couching (capturing the cheesecloth in 'invisible' thread). I love the texture of the fibers, which beautifully depict weathered, lined faces that have lived very full lives."
