Essay:
"I have been a quilter for more than 40 years. Only recently I have hydro-printed my own fabric, using traditional marbling techniques. I then draw with colored pencils and pens directly on the printed cotton and usually finish with hand quilting. Even though I'm now printing and drawing, I can't give up the tactile, soothing hand sewing and quilting. The drawings are in response to the patterns I see in the marbling. They snuggle into the complex colors and lines, not dominating the piece but appearing to grow out of it. Hand quilting adds another dimension, subtly emphasizing the illusion of depth created by the 'waves' of marbling. Babies have been on my mind a lot lately. My own are grown and thinking of having babies of their own. My mother is at the other end of that spectrum. I am in the middle. I find it very comforting to quietly focus on new life in this troubled world."
