Essay:

"My inspiration for this quilt was a small black and white photo of my father and me that I had just received from my older sister. 'Dad and Sandy' was faintly written on the back. It read: 'This is so sad, but it is true love. Taken after Mother's funeral.' I was seven years old then. I am sixty-five now and have no memory of my mother. My biggest challenge would be to find a way to fit a life-changing moment into an eight-inch square. I couldn't remember that moment, but as hours went by painting and stitching, I somehow knew that my father's shirt was red and gray, and I thought my dress was blue. Then all of a sudden I remembered the smell of roses. It was important to add the red of roses. Why a quilt? The time spent quilting allows me to think, to feel, and to heal. As I ran my fingers over the stitches and felt the soft valleys and hills, I knew that little girl would be ok. She might never remember her mother but she would always be able to smell the roses."
