Essay:
"Garden Visitor depicts a praying mantis that came to my yard one summer. It rains nearly every day in New Mexico during the summer, and the rich, brown, clay earth is actually visible on the praying mantis's front feet! First I manipulated the photograph in Photoshop to give it a more painterly quality, then printed it on high-quality cotton sateen fabric. After piecing it (a derivation of a traditional block), I quilted it in a grid pattern on an angle. Then I took a lime-green oil paintstick and painted over the entire piece, except the inner rectangle that contained the praying mantis and the adjacent pieces. Paintstick has a sheer, translucent quality that allows the fabric to show through. I chose to create this as a quilt because I enjoy the contradiction of using soft cloth to depict and celebrate hard stones and an insect with an exoskeleton."
