Essay:
"I started my art career as a painter. Over the years I wanted to learn new ways of making images so I explored other media including drawing, pastels, papermaking, and printmaking. I wanted a way to combine these different means of mark making and color application. I happened upon a surface design class and had an aha moment. This was a way for me to successfully combine my varied interests. Three Boats began as a relief print on white fabric. Color was added and then the image was stitched to form a quilt. The final addition of stitching affords me another opportunity to add line and color in addition to the physical texture it imparts to the final object. Technically this piece is a hand-colored relief print, but it also is a textile and a quilt."
