Essay:

African American women have always been at the forefront of the struggle for freedom and opportunity in America. This piece recalls the girls and women who courageously weathered the storms and violence of racist protests (even rotten tomatoes thrown at them by grown men!) as they integrated schools in America in the 1950s. The piece illustrates how African American women work tirelessly during the 60s and 70s during the height of the Black Power movement, setting examples of courage and commitment that continue to be emulated and appreciated around the world.

The hand holding the information on herbal medicine remedies typifies the presistent quest for education, self enlightenment and empowerment that so many African American women continue to pass on to our daughters and sons despite tremendous odds and adversities. The bloodied hand has burst throught the glass ceilings of corporate America, changing history, changing minds, changing attitudes and opening opportunities for relevant change. African American women have always been there ... breaking down barriers and helping lift up our communities! I pay homage to the strength, courage and determination of African American women!
