Essay:

The Preamble of the United States Constitution is the main visual focus of this quilt. There are also photos of George Washington and President Obama's inauguration.

Artist's statement: In honor of the Office of the Presidency of the United States, this quilted wall hanging honors the first President of the United States as well as the 44th President, Barack Obama, the first African American President. It is also acknowledging the holding of enslaved Africans by our first President for whom this practice was a dilemma, as is recounted in several biographies of George Washington. By will, he freed those enslaved persons that were part of his households.

In this work of art, I show President Washington and his servant, a man of color, both holding the preamble to the Constitution of the United States. On the bottom of the quilt, I have photo transferred images of President Obama taking the oath of office.
