Artist Statement-
August 25, 2002 (hand written)
Description of "Yes Sir" Heartfelt Quilt (typed)
The "Yes Sir" quilt is machine pieced, machine and hand appliqued, and hand quilted. It measures 72 x 72 inches and contains one hand appliqued man's work shirt surrounded by one hundred machine appliqued red hearts.
Written on the one white heart appliqued to the shirt is the American Cancer Society's statistics on male breast cancer (one man to 100 women).
I designed the quilt in 1998, one week after my husband had undergone a radical mastectomy. The design was meant to bring awareness to male breast cancer, but the quilt serendipitously lends awareness to breast cancer in both genders. The quilt is dedicated to my husband, Melvin Mitchell. Yes Sir! He is number one in my heart. Mel had a 7 year survival from the Breast Cancer- He died in 2005 from another type of cancer. (hand written) Artist also includes a copy of her husbands obituary, a History of the "Yes Sir" Breast Cancer Awareness Quilt, loan agreement document to Akron General Development Foundation, a flyer to elect Melvin Mitchell as Ravenna Township Trustee, Celebration of Lights Memorial for Melvin Mitchell flyer
