Essay:
The Log Cabin pattern of this crib quilt may have had special meaning for the quiltmaker, Amanda Canfield Haight. The daughter of pioneer Solomon Canfield and his wife, she was born in a log cabin in 1848, after her parents moved from Sodus, New York, to Hillsdale County, Michigan. In 1869 she married James Haight. Their first child was born in 1870, the year this quilt was made. The top, pieced out of silk fabrics to form the Log Cabin or Courthouse Steps pattern, is tied to the rose-colored silk crepe back with rose-colored thread. All of the sewing except for the border has been done by hand. The crib quilt was given to the Dearborn Historical Museum by the quiltmaker's grandson, Floyd Haight.
