Other notes on how the quiltmaker learned, and how and why they quilt:

As a sub I take quilting handwork with me to school. This provides an opportunity to talk about quilting with teenagers. In 1986 on my mother's 70th Birthday I made her a friendship autograph quilt with 48 squares signed by friends and family either appliqued or embroidered with sashing. My Mother's Birthday quilt was the most special quilt I ever made. This was presented to her at her 70th birthday party. I have made many quilts and pillows as gifts for my family. Quilting gives me pleasure to make a beautiful quilt and unique thing in the world with too much ugliness, too much uniformity. It is a personal statement, a means of expression a gift of love.
