This Doll quilt descended through the Axley-Meroney family of the town of Murphy, Cherokee County, in western North Carolina. Cherokee County formed in 1839, is the westernmost of North Carolina's one hundred counties. Located between the Tennessee mountains and north Georgia, Cherokee County initially included present-day Graham and Clay counties. Murphy is the county seat and Cherokee County's largest town. The donor of this quilt was the great, great granddaughter of Felix Porter (F.P.) Axley and Margaret Knox Johnston. F.P. was the son of Felix Axley and Martha Temple Porter Axley. F. P. became a lawyer, joining his father's law practice at an early age. He served with the 39th regiment North Carolina Troops during the Civil War enlisting as a private in Company C on September 24, 1861. In May 1862, he transferred to company G and shortly thereafter was elected to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He resigned in early 1863 due to an unspecified physical disability.
