Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:

The following information was supplied by the quiltmaker: If your quilt is based on a traditional pattern or an earlier quilt, what is the name of the pattern? Where did you learn the pattern? "My original concept, to link traditional blocks to create the story line." Other techniques used include: "Reverse applique for the title around the center block." How did you choose the materials used in your quilt? "I chose fabric I felt was appropriate, that it, expressive of the spirit of what was being represented, for example, ultrasuede for the bear, the print for the goose." The quilt commemorates the quiltmaker's divorce: "the bear represents my ex-husband." Also represented in the quilt is "Alaskan wildlife -- the large, white triangles are hand quilted with a flock of snow geese. The pattern is from tracing around an Eskimo carved ivory pin of a snow goose." How long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? "Since 1969 when I lived in Barrow, AK. I began sewing doll clothes at age 4, but to make a quilt for my baby daughter, I bought the book '101 Quilt Patterns' by Ruby McKenna." What was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? "Yes. All of the above; my Aunt Mary had clipped the entry form and sent it to me. I didn't want to disappoint her. I appreciated her faith in my quilting." Has being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? "It reinforced my determination to continue striving to improve my quilting and to enter more competitions on the national level."
