Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:

The following information was supplied by the quiltmaker: If your quilt is based on a traditional pattern or an earlier quilt, what is the name of the pattern? Where did you learn the pattern? "The pattern and setting was included in the calendar from Oxmoor House but I redrafted it from a twelve (12) inch square to a nine (9) inch square, a more suitable size for a smaller single bed cover." "The quilting was done by machine in an original quilting pattern." How did you choose the materials used in your quilt? "With my daughter, we shopped for the colors and prints which would best reflect the new wallpaper border of a similar star quilt pattern in the bedroom." "I made the quilt for my then eight (8) year old granddaughter, Aimee, for her new "big girl" bedroom décor. Because she had a great fascination for stars, we looked through my sampler calendar from which she chose the pattern "Grandma's Star" which was very appropriate for my project." How long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? "At that time I had been making quilts for about two years. I became interested after seeing an article in our local newspaper about a community service quilt completed by a group in our area. I joined the group and purchased basic instruction books, attempted different techniques and am mainly self-taught by trial and error. Attending lectures and quilt shows inspires me to create original designs especially for challenges provided by my quilt group." What was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? "I never thought that as an amateur my work would qualify for acceptance in a contest, but on the insistence of my daughter I reluctantly entered the contest. To say the least, I was shocked to learn that my quilt was chosen best from all entries received from Connecticut. I have entered quilts in shows and several fairs and each time I have won first place and special award ribbons." Has being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? "It has given me more confidence in my work and has challenged me to try new techniques. Quilting is now becoming a fabric and textile art form. I look forward to creating and making more quilted pieces, being inspired by the many quilters of yesterday and today."
