Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:
The following information was supplied by the quiltmaker: If your quilt is based on a traditional pattern or an earlier quilt, what is the name of the pattern? Where did you learn the pattern? "It is based on 2 traditional blocks put together in an innovative way. Blocks from pattern books, design (set arrangement) my own." "Microwave dyed patriotic fabrics to give them a sky/cloud overall look so they would work well together." How did you choose the materials used in your quilt? "During Desert Storm a lot of patriotic fabric was available -- uniquely American in design -- I was working on a series of quilts using fabric from other countries. I.F. I was made using predominantly Japanese fabrics, I.F. II predominantly African. Deciding the patriotic was the perfect choice for I.F. III, American, I made it. Each quilt uses the same 2 blocks but vary in arrangement and size. Each maintains the integrity of the fabrics used. "One of 4 quilts in a series using international fabrics each having its own character." A statement "of strength of America in its liberty, freedom and responsibility." How long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? "I started making quilts just before the bicentennial of the USA. Began making them on a regular basis in 1983. I taught myself at first. Then began taking classes from local and nationally known teachers. I have taught quilting and do lectures." What was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? "I go to quilt shows frequently and enjoy seeing the wide variety of talent exhibited in the quilts. I enter shows, some with cash prizes, some with ribbons, some with no awards. I feel it is important to share my work with others as I have enjoyed and benefited from seeing many." Has being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? "It's exciting to win. It gives a certain validation to my work. The face of a child, parent or friend who receives one as a gift is a validation as well. I make quilts because I love to make them, winning doesn't change that reason."
