The most recent date listed on the quilt is 1905. In 1906 the Ladies Auxiliary donated $1,022.87 for the church building fund. The assumption is that this quilt raised a significant proportion of that money. My grandfather's name is on the quilt without a "BA" after his name (there are other names with the BA attached). He graduated from Knox College in Toronto in 1906. This leads me to believe the quilt was completed in 1906.

Blocks are 9 inches square, sashed with 3 inch white sashings with 3 inch red joiners and a 3 inch red border. The backing is 4 pieces of white sheeting. Cotton batting. The edge is finished with a straight grain white binding machined to front and hand stitched to back with rounded corners. It is hand quilted with a variety of stitches in white thread. Quilted in the ditch around designs. Diagonal lines in inner sashing and straight lines 3 inches apart in outer border.

Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

In 1903 my great uncle, the Reverend James Andrew Miller, was called to serve as minister to the Childerhouse Presbyterian Church. He was the first minister to have served there for longer than 6 months, and part of his job was to organize the building of a church. The estimated cost of the new building was $2,000 to $2,500. In 1906 the Ladies Auxiliary reported having raised $1,022.87 for the church building fund. I am assuming a good part of this money came from the making of this quilt. The quilt stayed in the family, and, upon the death of JA Miller on 25 March 1950, it was passed on to his eldest daughter, Mary Love. The family lore stated that it had been made by "grateful parishioners" at Rev. Miller's first church of 15 that he founded during his career. Mary Love believed that church was in Toronto, but in fact it was in northern Ontario at Depot Harbor, now a ghost town near Parry Sound. In 2005, Mary Love was moved into a care facility and whichever of her belongings her family was not interested in were auctioned off. An unnamed woman bought the quilt and approached Mary afterwards for information about it, in the interest of re-selling it to someone who had a direct interest in the quilt. She approached the Riverdale Church in Toronto, but they were uninterested in it. Mary told this story at a family gathering in Oshawa, where my brother heard it for the first time. As I am the only quilter in the family, and the current family genealogist, he bought the quilt from the woman and gave it to me for Christmas, 2005. I write songs about quilting, and his card suggested there might be a song in this story. I wrote the song before I found out about the Depot Harbour connection, and recorded it on "In The Heart Of a Quilt" CD, released in 2006. My brother visited the Presbyterian Church Archives in Toronto and tracked down the fundraising information for the Childerhouse Church. I have also written an article about the quilt for the Canadian Quilter magazine (Summer 2006). Some interesting names on the quilt include: my grandfather (Rev. Joseph George Miller), their sister (Ethel Miller), their parents (James Miller and Mrs. Jas Miller), and various cousins. The name of then Premier of Ontario, Hon. JP Whitney (Feb 8, 1905 to Sept 25, 1914) is on the quilt. There is a block labeled: Gowanda Hospital, which is located in Erie County, NY. Closed now, it housed a pscychiatric center and geriatric ward at various times in its history. There is a block labelled "Knox College", which is where my grandfather and Uncle Jim received their ecclesiastical training. The central block is entitled "Board of Managers", and contains the names of the previous ministers for the church, with their dates of service. "JA Miller, BA" is the name in the centre of the quilt.

There is quite a bit of damage on the quilt. Where there are "?" marks in the transcription above, the embroidery has worn away, but the original pencil markings are still mostly legible. There are names missing as a result of fabric wear and damage (especially in the upper right hand corner) where it is not possible to ascertain how many names were embroidered in that area. I have Census and church records information on approximately 10% of the names on this quilt. This includes verification of their residence in Depot Harbour during the 1901 Census of Canada, membership in the church, and marriage/births at the church. Also includes family connections of JA Miller, from my genealogy research. There is still some question as to how JA Miller came to own the quilt. Perhaps, as the minister in charge of the fundraising effort, the Ladies Aid group thought he should have it. He did not believe in gambling of any form and would not have purchased raffle tickets on the quilt (nor, perhaps, allowed tickets to be sold on it).

There is a block (Row 4, Column 3) entitled "Willing Workers", with 27 names. There is another block called "Ladies Aid Society" (Row 2, Column 3) with 15 names. One of them, Mrs. CW MacDonald is listed as Treasurer and it is she who presented the fundraising report to the Church in 1906. In the same block is Mrs. HH McCraig, listed as the President. Presumably all these names are of those who helped with the making of the quilt. There are some children listed on the "Willing Workers" block.

A Turkey red and white quilt made to raise funds to build the Presbyterian Church in Depot Harbor in 1906. There are approximately 833 embroidered signatures on the quilt, which is 5 blocks wide and 6 blocks long.
