Essay:

My mother-in-law was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Feb 1999. After surgery she was told she had three months to live. The word went out and two different "Cuddle Quilts" were made for her by two different quilt groups that she belonged to at the time. This one was made by members of the Northwest Quilting Connection, a group she helped found in the mid 1980s. She served as president from January 13, 1990-January 11, 1992. She also served as their newsletter editor for a number of years. Wini died on August 23, 1999 one week after her 82nd birthday (August 16, 1917) at home in a special bed in the living room with her son Gary and myself by her side on Lopez Island, Washington. She was in a coma most of the last two days while Gary and I sang to her all the songs she loved so well from what is known as "the American Song Book", i.e Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Rogers & Hart, etc. Wini was born in Yakima, WA but grew up in Seattle. She had a degree in Home Economics from Univeristy of Washington. She was proficient and talented in many forms of needlework and usually volunteered to be editor of guild newsletters wherever she lived. I saved 30 years of correspondence between Wini amd myself and also inherited al her files, books and quilt studio.
