Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

Sue wrote me that she had such a wonderful time at the 2005 induction of Bets Ramsey and was so impressed with the teamwork of everyone that she came prepared to collect signatures at Celebration 2006 in order to make some kind of commemorative quilt. Sue also likes to take photographs and had offered to take photos for TQHF during Celebration and to write occasional short articles for tourist/travel magazines. After her attendance at Virginia Avery's induction in 2006, Sue went back to Virginia with her signed blocks and began designing the quilt. Eventually she would also transfer some of her many photos to the back of the quilt as well.

Why was the quilt made?

Commemorative; Fundraising

Describe the source of the pattern:

Describe anything about the design of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

A special "thank you" to Shelby Gretz-Whitcomb of Marion, Indiana, for helping me transcribe the names on this quilt while it was still hanging in Marion at The Quilters Hall of Fame/Marie Webster House and I was 2,000 miles away at home. Five Honoree's were present at Virginia Avery's induction... Georgia Bonesteel, Yvonne Porcella, Bets Ramsey, Donna Wilder and of course Jinny herself. To set-off each of the Honoree signatures, Sue did a photo transfer of the Honoree Medallion to fabric, had a friend machine embroider it and then appliquéd a medallion by each Honoree's signature. Among other notable signatures on the quilt are TQHF founder Hazel Carter as well as Rosalind Webster Perry, one of two granddaughters of Marie Webster. Jinny Aavery is also an avid jazz fan and jazz pianst. TQHF President Karen Alexander's husband is also a jazz musician so she asaked Jinny if she would play duinr Celebration as a fund-raiser. Jinny said yes and Karen put together a jazz pick-up band, including her husband who flew in from Seattle with his clarinet to join Jinny and the other musicians that evening. The montage on the back of the quilt contains photos of the Jam Session as well.

Any other notes or stories about the quiltmaker:

Susan Jones first visited The Quilters Hall of Fame located in the restored Marie Webster House in Marion, Indiana, August 2004, a month after it officially opened. She attended her first TQHF Celebration a year later in 2005 when Bets Ramsey of Nashville, TN was inducted into the hall of fame. Sue entered a quilt in the 2005 TQHF contest that year also. Sue was interviewed by Karen Alexander in Sept 2009. Born Susan Kay Whitworth in Burlingto, Iowa in 1948, Sue relates that she did not sleep under quilts as she was growing up nor did she ever observe anyone making quilts. Her first attempt at making a quilt was in 1981. She taught herself using a book, though eventually she would take classes and join a guild. She has made some 56 quilts and has kept a photo journal of her quilts.

Description of quilt:

Designed, pieced and hand quilted by Susan K. Jones, Waynesboro, Virginia. Embroidery by Connie Broy. Musical “score” machine quilting by Bonnie Spoon. The morning glories and butterflies were adapted from Marie D. Webster patterns. The Marie Webster House design was adapted from a photo. When she donated this quilt to TQHF as a fund raiser, the maker wrote "This quilt was crafted as a tribute to those whose efforts made Celebration 2006 a resounding success."
