This quilt top was made by members of the Happy Independent Aid Society, in 1936, as identified in the center block. The Happy Independent Aid Society began as the Ladies Guild of the McBride Methodist Church. The village of McBride is in Montcalm County, Michigan. When the society grew to include board members who were not members of the church, the church required they become an independent organization. Some members lived in the village of McBride, with the majority living on surrounding farms. The women met in each other's homes, and made quilts/blankets for families in need.
