While machine quilting this design, Scarlett added clear seed beads every so often, scattering them across the top to add a glittering effect. She wanted the quilt to be the image of a night sky, seen as if one was laying on their back in an open space, with the trees surrounding you. Scarlett does stargaze from time to time and has been known to be up very late at night to see comets, shooting stars and other special events.

Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

When Scarlett joined the Quilter's Sew-Ciety of Redding, California in January of 1983, she wanted to participate in the friendship blocks that members were talking about making for each other. The first person who asked for friendship blocks was Carrie Minor and her Rooster quilt top is currently in Scarlett's collection. Carrie's Rooster quilt top is entered in the Quilt Index Signature Quilt Project. Scarlett had to wait until it was her turn to ask for blocks and since she was a very new member, it wasn't until 1984 that her turn came. In the meantime, she spent hours researching and collecting the block patterns that she wanted the members to make for her. Since the membership at that time was around 35-40, Scarlett thought she would be able to have all but one of the blocks made by members, but due to lack of interest or other reasons, several members didn't volunteer to make blocks or didn't follow through with their offers. Scarlett made all the remaining blocks to complete her quilt design. Stargazing was accepted into the 1992 National Quilting Association show in Bowling Green, Ohio and the 1992 Dollywood quilt show in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Scarlett also entered it into several local quilt shows, in Winters, Chester and Redding, California during 1992.
