And…her feet don’t like socks One of Linda Symon's blocks was also appliqued on the back, since it had a heart appliqued in the center of the black square and Scarlett felt it wasn't suitable for making into a flower. Laurie Short of Redding, California, organized a series of quilting retreats for friends from 1989 to 1991. These four retreats included a friendship block project that everyone worked on, along with their own projects. Laurie charged a small fee to attend, to cover her costs of providing common fabric(s) for the blocks and for some of the food expense. These retreats were attended by invitation only and expanded from 3 day events for the first two retreats, to four day events for the last two retreats. Laurie provided supply lists for the friendship blocks and a list of what else to bring, such as sleeping bags, towels, etc. Meals were potluck and each person was responsible for one meal. She drew a map, along with her written directions to the retreat site. Laurie Short’s second retreat was held in Shingletown, California on March 9-11, 1990. Viola, California, was the location of the first retreat and that name was added with the signatures as the name of the retreat even though the location had changed to a house in Shingletown. Laurie made up binders for each friend to keep all their retreat information together. She also made worry bears as a gift given at one of the retreats. Another gift was a handkerchief doll. She gave out handmade awards for various achievements. Scarlett won the Night Owl award, since she likes to stay up very late! Scarlett still has her worry bear, handkerchief doll, Night Owl award and retreat binder. A teacher at local quilt shops since the late 70s, Laurie Short is a founding member of the Quilter’s Sew-Ciety of Redding, California. She is a quilt historian, quilt restorer and appraiser.

Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

This quilt was made from the signature blocks exchanged at the second retreat organized by Laurie Short of Redding, California. Because each person made four blocks for each of the other people attending, there were a large number of blocks to put together in one quilt. Scarlett was inspired to take the blocks she received and run a gathering stitch around the black center square, drawing up the square so that the blocks could be turned into flowers. These were appliqued down with beads in the center of the black, to make them more flowerlike. Some of the triangles were faced so they could become three dimensional petals, allowing the flowers/blocks to be overlapped. A picture of the original signature block, a black square with four red triangles sewn to it, was uploaded with this record. Scarlett entered this quilt in the Dollywood, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee quilt show held on May 24 & 25th, 1992, where it won Second Place in Applique Quilts. Scarlett received $400 in prize money along with her ribbon. Besides Dollywood, this quilt was juried into the 1991 National Quilting Association show held in Lincoln, Nebraska, the 1991 National Quilt Festival in Branson, Missouri, the 1991 AIQA show (International Quilt Festival) in Houston, Texas. In 1992, it was shown in the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia. Scarlett entered it in several local quilt shows, one in Redding, California and another in Chester, California. Scarlett was invited to send a quilt to the Pajarro Valley Quilt Association's 1998 quilt show and she chose to send this quilt as an example of her work.
