Details about why the quilt was made:

The quilt was made because the maker had an interest in older, historical quilts and few were found in Breckenridge or Summit County. So, this Signature Quilt was made as a lasting legacy. A number of Signature Quilt presentations were given by the maker at local events, shops and other venues. As stated on the label, the intent is for the quilt to stay in the local community.

Where did the maker find their pattern?

Commercial/Published source: Computer software; Original to maker; Traditional pattern variation

Commercial name of the pattern for the top:

Prairie Star pattern from Electric Quilt 7

Describe anything about the design of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

The original design had 576 off white signature blocks, without sashing, in the center of the quilt. When fewer blocks were signed, the quilt was redesigned with the diamond in a square blocks, sashing and Trip Around the World color scheme. This actually resulted in a more interesting design. Many of the fabrics were scraps from previous Civil War Era quilt projects, including a reproduction of Jane Stickle’s 1863 quilt as detailed in Brenda Papadakis’s Dear Jane book.

Any other notes or stories about the quiltmaker:

Judy Keim started sewing as a young girl, took Home Economics and made most of her clothes in high school, then did knitting and counted cross stitch, started quilting in 1996, developed an interest in historical quilts, and has since evolved from a traditional quilter to a fiber artist creating contemporary quilts and other fiber objects incorporating beading, metalwork, and felting.

Description of quilt:

A quilt to be locally retained, give people the opportunity to be part of local art legacy and history, raise funds and commemorate Breck’s 150th anniversary. It was designed, machine pieced and hand appliqued by Judy Keim, local quilt maker and fiber artist in Breckenridge, CO. Started in January, 2008 and finished in December, 2011. The project was co-coordinated by the quilt maker and the Town of Breckenridge, with the fundraising done by the Breckenridge Historical Alliance and Tea Time Quilt Shop.

Essay:

This local Signature Quilt project gave people an opportunity to be a part of Breckenridge, Summit County and Colorado art and history. Additionally, it raised funds, perpetuated and highlighted quilting, documented quilt history and supported Breckenridge’s 150 year celebration, Arts District and Historical Alliance. The original methodology was to collect signatures during the summer of 2008, sew the signature blocks into a quilt to be owned by the town, and complete the quilt by 2009. In actuality, the block signing took place from early 2008 until late 2010, and the quilt was completed in December 2011. The original quilt design accommodated 576 signed blocks. The signing was actually concluded at 181 blocks. A $10 donation to the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance, a local historical society, was collected for each block signed. Therefore, over $1500 was raised. People from 23 states and England signed the blocks. Documentation information, on the people that signed the blocks, their place of residence and affiliations, was collected and entered into a computer spreadsheet. This information, pictures of the quilt and individual blocks, and several published articles were incorporated into a notebook. Portions of the process, to make this special quilt, are similar to the methodology the quilt maker uses for many of her quilts. The design is original, using Electric Quilt computer software to create it. All the fabric is pre-washed 100% cotton. The borders are machine pieced and comprised of predominantly reproduction fabrics, already available in her fabric stash. On the bottom border is hand appliquéd writing, and each of the four corners has a machine pieced Prairie Star block that contains 80 pieces per block. The signature blocks are made with newly purchased material selected for its signature application capabilities, such as ease of signing, readability and lack of fraying. She cut 600 signature blocks intended to fill the 24 block x 24 block center area, ironed freezer paper to the fabric to stabilize the writing surfaces and marked a two inch signing area on each block with thread. The blocks were then signed using Pigma pens, heat set, triangles were added and the resultant blocks were sewn together. The sashings, borders, hanging sleeve and label were added, and then the quilt was totally hand quilted. The hand quilting alone took four months of 6-8 hour days. All of this resulted in a 67x67 inch quilt.
