Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:

The greens used are two different greens with over-dyed, black decorative elements. Quilting stitches are six to nine per inch. The main body of the quilt is quilted in parallel lines from the interior top edge of the border to the interior bottom edge of the border. These lines are spaced 1/4 - 3/4 of an inch apart. The sashes and connecting asquares are quilted on the diagonal with lines 1/4 inch apart, separated by areas without quilting that are 3/4 inch wide. The border is elaborately quilted using a running feather border design. The open spaces around the feathe design are filled with parallel stitching 1/4 inch or less apart. The batt is cotton.

The quilt passed from Philena to her daughter, Angelina Craver, then to Angelina's son, Arthur Hambleton Craver, then to Arthur's daughter, Florence Philena Oberholtzer. It became part of an estate sale in Danville, CA in 1995 when Florence died and was purchased from an antique shop in Petaluma, CA in 2001.

This quilt was made by Philena's friends and family members, some of whom are no doubt named on the quilt. From my research, I think it was initiated by her mother-in-law and that many contributed blocks.

Description of quilt:

This quilt is a single-pattern friendship quilt comprised of twenty five 12" X 12" blocks, a border, and a folded, front to back edging.

Essay:

The most striking feature of this quilt is the symetical placement of the names on the quilt's surface and a "hidden design" described by the names in the center. Details about this quilt and Philena Cooper Hambleton's life are provided in my book titled "Philena's Friendship Quilt: A Quaker Farewell to Ohio," Ohio University Press, 2009.
