Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:
Six scenes of children playing appear on this American counterpane. The games and activities are thread needle or London Bridge, spinning top, bob cherry, marbles, and feeding poultry (one scene with chickens, the other with ducks). Each of the six scenes is bordered on two sides by an ogive design of a vine with pods, seeds, and leaves, and on the top and bottom by a flower and leaf garland, connected by bows to the ogive. The fabric was imported but it is not known whether from England or France. The vignettes were taken from the engravings by Francesco Bartolozzi, published in 1787 and 1788, after William Hamilton's drawings of children (Florence Montgomery, "Printed Textiles: English and American Cottons and Linens, 1700-1850", New York: Viking Press 1970, p. 270) Four of the plate-printed scenes were used in an unfinished pieced bedcover, 1790-1800, made by Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, in the collection of The Mount Vernon Ladies's Association of the Union. Winterthur also has a piece of this fabric ("First Flowerings: Early Virginia Quilts", Washington, DC: DAR Museum, 1987, p. 29, p.40).
