Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:
A wholcloth quilt featuring a toile of Dr. Syntax. The main character, the man in the coat, wig, and three cornered hat, is Dr. Syntax, a character in a series of satirical poems by William Combe (under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill) illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson and published by R. Ackermann between about 1812 and 1822. Rowlandson (1756-1827) was one of England's greatest caricaturists, who commented on politics and society of his day. Dr. Syntax was a fictional clergyman/schoolmaster who was introduced in "Dr. Syntax In Search of the Picturesque," a satire on William Gilpin's popular and influential illustrated guidebooks extolling the romantic appreciation of landscape. The Doctor took three "Tours." See file for printouts of the original images, which are slightly different from the versions in the toile, and for their identification.
