Said to have been made by Elizabeth Taylor Kobler out of fabric scraps of Revolutionary War uniforms made by Barnette /Barnet/Barney Kobler, her tailor husband, in the 1770s while they were living in Harper’s Ferry [then Virginia, now West Virginia]. Numerous fabrics date to 1780s-90s, giving the quilt a later date. Some of the wools used have been identified as those used in military uniforms including post-war militia uniforms. Kobler is listed as living in Washington County, Maryland [near Harper’s Ferry] by the 1790 census. Inlaid wool patchwork such as this was often done by men who were tailors. It is possible that Barnette/Barnet/Barney Kobler worked on this quilt, or taught his wife the technique.
