Rated 3 (good) on HPQNJ's scale for visual effect. A close-up of this quilt reveals Centennial print fabric. Individual letters of the word "Centennial" are printed in white on blue and red stars. The background is made up of similar blue and red shooting stars. The oriental look of the crane fabric begins to show the influence of Japanese design following the exhibitions of Japanese culture in London in 1862 and at the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876. Family history recalls that the quiltmaker was fond of a man named Crane, hence the four cranes in the center of the quilt.
