Tell the story of how the quilt was obtained:
New Jersey quiltmakers were enthusiastic participants in the friendship quilt fad which became popular in the 1840's. This is a particularly fine local example with many visible stamps and signatures from the prominent Lambert and Coryell families. The town of Lambertville was formerly called Coryell's Ferry. Martin Coryell was the engineer for the construction of the Delaware and Raritan Canal. He later moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and this quilt may have been made as a parting gift for one of the family members.
