Coverlet or also called a summer spread. Printed patchwork cheater cloth, glazed, c. 1830-1840. The fabric glaze and colors are still intact, probably never washed. The printed pattern is "Puss in the Corner" next to "Hourglass." Selvage and hand hemmed edges, with very tiny stitches. This cheater fabric is shown on pages 51 and 52 of "Calico and Chintz'" (Adamson) and on page 95 of "Clues in the Calico" (Brackman). The history of cheater cloth is in those two publications. The quilt top is a "drab" color style, with an absence of red and purple, c. 1800-1815 when a 15-year patent on quercitron (yellow) dye expired. Drabs went out of style wthe advent of mineral dyes c. 1815. HowAcquired: Donated to the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum by Anne Olsen of Laramie, WY Ownership/History: origin unknown.
