Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

This quilt was designed and created by Yasuko Saitoh's students in Japan. It commemorates the 9/11 tragedy and was made to offer sympathy to the families and all Americans. Predominant colors are black, cream, orange and multi prints of silks, kimonos, prints and solids. Thin batting, possibly silk. Construction was machine and hand pieced, machine and hand applique, machine quilted. Quilting pattern contains stippling over most (small); free form accents and densely quilted. Medallion style center containing cream with machine embroidery inscription in black and green thread. The inscription reads: "We feel the pain and sorrow of the people who suffered the terrible tragedy on September 11, 2001. We offer our prayers for the bereaved families. May they be blessed with an abundance of peace and hope. We also wish for everlasting peace around the world." Surrounded by floral (fancy cut) prints and fans interspersed, in raw edge applique. Second "ring" contains 16 blocks 9-1/4" - 9-1/2" square. Blocks are hand appliqued to background (cream, black and waves). 7 triangles of pieced triangles 9-1/4" x 10-1/4" are hand applied and interspersed on quilt. Outer edges are pieced "waves". Yellow shades and black on top. Blues, greys and blacks also. Inscription is in English and Japanese. This quilt was shown between 09/2002 and 05/2003 in Pennsylvania, California, Texas and Kentucky. It came to a permanent home at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum in May, 2003. HowAcquired: Donated to the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum by the makers. Ownership/History:Made in Japan. Made to honor the victims of 9/11 terrorist attack in U.S. Marty Kishiro coordinated the making of this commemorative quilt. Marty, President of Rasenkaidan (a Japanese-based distributor of quilting books, magazines, and design software) donated the silk fabrics to award-winning quilter Yasuko Saitoh. Yasuko invited eight of her students to participate by making the blocks, which she then assembled into the quilt. The blocks of the inner band depict native Japanese flowers such as the peony (botan), Japanese apricot (ume), chrysanthemum (kiki), and cherry blossom (sakura). Surrounding the flowers are a symbol for peace (shippo), a fan (oumen), and groups of triangles that symbolize protection from tragedy (uroko). Near the edges of the quilt, Yasuko made waves (nami) to represent the bodies of water that surround Japan. The group quilt is composed of pure silk fabrics, many of which were cut from young women's formal kimonos (furisode) and children's kimonos (kodomo-no-kimono). Using a free-motion stitch, Yasuko inscribed a message of sympathy in the quilt's center, in both English and Japanese. The Freedom Quilt toured the U.S. between 09/2002 and 05/2003, and was then donated to the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. LocMade: /////Japan
