Black sateen is heavily quilted with elaborate design of feathers and stars; each piece in the floral wreath is outline quilted

Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:

The Roosevelt Rose Quilt was designed by Ruth E. Finley, author of Old Patchwork Quilts and the Women Who Made Them; this design was presented in Good Housekeeping in January 1934 as a pattern available for purchase. The pattern was named after President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This pattern was usually made using black sateen, as is this one. The dark sateen serves as a perfect setting for the multi-colored, dimensional flowers, some of which are done in floral prints. There is an additional floral motif within the center appliqued medallion frame.

Kay Cockerell, who quilted the Roosevelt Rose quilt with the Thursday Quilters, is the wife of the quiltmaker's grandson. His mother gave the couple this quilt to finish.

Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

The quiltmaker made this quilt in 1939-40, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president. According to the family, the quiltmaker's husband was a life-long Democrat (the family called him a "brass collar Democrat") and a strong supporter of the President. Nearly forty years separate the making of the top and the quilting of the finished quilt. In 1976 it was quilted by the wife of the quiltmaker's grandson and five of her quilting friends, the Thursday Quilters, who met every week for a quilting bee.
