Tell the story of how the quilt was obtained:
This quilt was made by Amanada Pairlee Hammonds in 1858 when she was 18 and living with her parents in Rusk County, Texas. In 1860, Amanda married George Alwin Linn of Kentucky. The Linn family joined the McMullan Colony, a Confederate colonization group that hoped to resettle in South America after the Civil War. The group attempted to sail to Brazil in 1865. The party's ship, The Derby, wrecked off the coast of Cuba en route; the Linns survived the wreck, as did this quilt, which is said to have been in salt water for several days. The Linns and their party eventually made it to Brazil. According to family/donor information, a relative, Mrs. Daisy Linn Chase (probably the daughter of the quiltmaker) of Los Angeles, California, sent this quilt to Texas Governor Coke Stevenson in January 1947 for donation to the Texas Memorial Museum, University of Texas.
