This quilt may have been repaired and/or stabilized in 1984-1985 when members of the Austin Area Quilt Guild helped a professional textile conservator repair and/or stabilize approximately thirty quilts then owned by the Texas Memorial Museum, University of Texas at Austin. This quilt is unbacked and unbound.

What is inscribed on the quilt?

Some blocks are embroidered with the following: "Mamie, Effie and Bertie"; "N"; "L"; "FC Institute"; "Wet or Dry, A Friend Am I. F". Dates embroidered are "Oct. 30 1886"; "1889." Two blocks have printed ribbon saying "Prohibition." There are printed floor sacks on the reverse foundation fabric.

Quilt's construction techniques are visible from the uncovered back; foundation fabrics used are flour sacks, including two flour companies from Tennessee; some of the crazy patches are held together only by decorative stitching; blocks are machine sewn together. Appearance of blocks suggests that the blocks were made by different people.

Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

Donor records do not record the identity of the quiltmaker or the date of the quilt's donation to the Texas Memorial Museum, University of Texas, though its accession number suggests this quilt was received by the Museum between 1950 and 1959. The quilt was donated by Mrs. J. T. Rowell of Terrell, Texas. This quilt is one of approximately forty-two quilts that the Texas Memorial Museum (TMM) at the University of Texas at Austin transferred to the University’s Center for American History (CAH) in April 2003 as part of TMM’s transfer of selected material culture objects from its collections to CAH and other research facilities on the UT-Austin campus. These TMM quilts are now part of CAH’s Winedale Quilt Collection. Information relating to each quilt’s provenance is based on documentation recorded by TMM staff at the time of acquisition, which began in the early 1940s and continued until 2003.
