6 inch border of plain white fabric, but a white fabric different from the white fabric in quilt center, suggesting that the border fabric is newer that the center fabric. The tradename "Cloth of Gold" appears on one of the border selveges.

Feathered wreaths in plain blocks; feathered vines in borders; grids and outline quilting in pieced blocks.

Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:

Heavy pencil quilting lines are still visible on the quilt top. It appears that the feathered star blocks were pieced first by hand and the quilt assembled by machine at a later date. The borders may have been added later. Quilting appears unfinished because it is unequally dense.

Mrs. Edwin R. Smith (address unknown) inherited this quilt from her grandmother, the quiltmaker. According to the donor ca. 1959, the quilt was "Grandmother's quilt, over one hundred years old."

Describe anything about the history of the quilt that wasn't already recorded in a previous field:

This quilt is one of approximately forty-two quilts that the Texas Memorial Museum (TMM) at the University of Texas at Austin transferred to the University’s Center for American History (CAH) in April 2003 as part of TMM’s transfer of selected material culture objects from its collections to CAH and other research facilities on the UT-Austin campus. These TMM quilts are now part of CAH’s Winedale Quilt Collection. Information relating to each quilt’s provenance is based on documentation recorded by TMM staff at the time of acquisition, which began in the early 1940s and continued until 2003. This quilt was accessioned by the Texas Memorial Museum March 9, 1959. It was donated by Mrs. Edwin R. Smith, the granddaughter of the quiltmaker. The date of donation and the name of the quiltmaker are not known.
