Describe the techniques used to make the quilt top:

Heavily embroidered, piecing features excellent needlework including silk ribbon embroidery, ruching, crewel work, and chenille. Sawtooth edges are prairie points individually attached and of varying colors of brown, tan, and cream. Each corner is embroidered between two prairie points, giving the effect of a cornerstone. Decorative stitching along both edges of all sashing and border. All blocks save two contain embroidered motifs, painting, dimensional embellishments etc. of flowers, with decorative stitching along seams of all patches.

Beautiful example of a Crazy quilt with excellent needlework, including silk ribbon embroidery, ruching, crewel work, chenille; prairie points at edge add to fanciful appearance. This quilt is not finished: two of the blocks do not contain any of the elaborate embellishment that characterizes all other blocks. There is no backing. Foundation piecing and stitching is visible for study.

This quilt is one of approximately forty-two quilts that the Texas Memorial Museum (TMM) at the University of Texas at Austin transferred to the University’s Center for American History (CAH) in April 2003 as part of TMM’s transfer of selected material culture objects from its collections to CAH and other research facilities on the UT-Austin campus. These TMM quilts are now part of CAH’s Winedale Quilt Collection. Information relating to each quilt’s provenance is based on documentation recorded by TMM staff at the time of acquisition, which began in the early 1940s and continued until 2003. This quilt was purchased by the donor, a Texan, in Ohio during the 1980s; she donated the quilt to the Texas Memorial Museum on June 30, 1992. The quiltmaker is unknown.
