"Generations" Like golden needles pulling threads through the fabric of my family, quilting has been passed down from generation to generation. My ancestors were pioneers who helped to build this country during the 19th & 20th centuries. This quilt "Generations", begins the story with my great-grandmother, Britta (1870-1963). Britta was born in Iowa. As an 11 year old girl she walked with her parents and siblings from Kansas to Everett, Washington in 1881-82. They were part of the migration West by wagon train. Britta and her husban later homesteaded in Montana. My grandmother, Emma, (1889-1985) born in rural Iowa, was the wife of a farmer raising eight children during the great depression. My mother Florence, the only girl of hose eight children was born on that farm. Quilts were necessities, made to recycle the bits and scraps of fabric from flour sacks and clothiing into something needed to keep warm in a house with no central heating system. Born in Montana in 1948, I was taught quilting by my mother and both grandmothers. At 7 I helped my mother an grandmother tie a quilt for my be. Today I carry forward the quilting tradition using a long arm quilting machine. In 2004 I helped my 8 year old grandson, Alex, make his first quilt which was created during Hurricane Charley. The torch is being passed to Alex, who is the latest generation of quilters in the family.
