Madiba’s Stars
Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa | Cotton; English paper pieced, machine quilted
This quilt is a smaller version of a similar one I made some years ago to express the joy and celebration of our new South Africa. So when quilters were invited to contribute a quilt I made a version that would fit into the specifications required.
Nelson Mandela, our Madiba, transformed our dull grey society into a vibrant rainbow.
His path was marked
By the stars in the Southern hemisphere
And he walked the length of his days
Under African skies. — Paul Simon
Nelson Mandela, our Madiba, transformed our dull grey society into a vibrant rainbow.
Essay:
I was born and grew up in Pretoria and trained as a Home Economics Teacher. I moved to Natal when I got married to a farmer. I have always been passionate about sewing and when I retired I did a quilting course and got hooked! I belong to our local quilt guild and the regional guild in KwaZulu Natal. I have a wonderful studio to work in and happily spend my days sewing and quilting. There is always a new challenge around the corner. I am in the privileged position of being able to share my skills with a group of young girls in a sewing club, and often give quilt classes to adults.
