This is one of many lovely but utilitarian quilts made on the farm of Frederick & Anna Margaret (Maggie) Dietz outside DeSoto, IL on the banks of the Big Muddy River. My mother related memories from her childhood in the 1920's & 1930's of there usually being a quilt frame up in the large laundry/utility room off the dining room.

All of Grandma Dietz's quilts (of which I'm aware) were hand quilted, probably assisted by family and friends. Some were hand pieced, but many were machine pieced on a treadle machine still in use during my childhood visits (1960's & 1970's).
