When was this object acquired? Under what circumstances?
Tucson’s January 8th Memorial Foundation After the mass shooting and assassination attempt on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on January 8, 2011, many spontaneous memorial sites sprang up around Tucson as outlets for people's intense grief and outpouring of love, good wishes and care. The main memorial sites were the Safeway where the shooting took place, the hospital that was caring for injured victims, and the official office of the Congresswoman. These memorials continued to collect items months after the shooting and were eventually dismantled with great care and with respect for how they were left. Storage was donated and over 5,000 items were archived and catalogued by volunteers. Among these 5,000 plus items were nineteen quilts. Two of these quilts have found a home with Gabby Giffords. The remaining quilts are considered part of the January 8 Memorial Foundation and the Foundation has been privileged to have had the wonderful members of the Arizona Quilt Documentation Project capture as much of the story of these quilts as possible.
