Janet Haefner created this quilt using the clay sculpture she made in 1983 of Kachina children climbing a ladder to a mesa top for a dance.  She began sketching the general shape of the pueble, ladder and mesa top on a 48 inch by 6 feet piece of paper on her dining room wall.  After photoshpping several different size figures, she selected 14 inch size.  She then worked out the ladder rungs for each kachina to have a hand and a foot hold.  She taped the kachina to the paper.

The background was done in sections.  She used her own dyed silk to create the cave for the pueblo and some of the shadows in the cliff.  The backing materail came from a shop in Santa Fe and other textures from a variety of shops.

The pattern was placed on the design wall for the final fit.  She used basting and pinning techniques to get the work in place and used embroiidery thread as the quilting thread along the edge of each piece.  The ladder and the kachinas were made separately and appliqued to the top.  The kachinas were hand paperpieced for correct size.  She then layered the quilt and started the embroider/quilting, thus adding a lot of detail.  She painted silk for the feathers because real feathers were too fragile.  The final step was to put all the different embellishments.

The quilt was juried into the 2014 American Quilting Society Show in Phoenix, Arizona.
