History Notes
My grandmother passed away in 1983 and I inherited several trunks that included a couple of her quilts, a stack of appliqued blocks and lots of fabric scraps. I made a double bed sized quilt, that I machine pieced and hand quilted, from the best of the appliqued blocks and I used this quilt on my bed for several years. Then I put it away since I didn't want it to become worn and faded.

When reproduction prints started appearing in the early 90s, I pulled out the double bed sized quilt and decided to take it completely apart so I could use the vintage blocks in a new quilt. My skills as a quiltmaker had improved greatly and I wanted to do a better job of putting together a special quilt with these old blocks.

I chose a vintage pattern, the Dogtooth Violet, for the pieced blocks that alternate with the applique blocks. I collected signatures for the pieced blocks, then carefully selected the repro prints for each block, to balance out the vintage blocks as best as I could.

I asked a friend to hand quilt this quilt for me and I traded a quilt top from my stash to her for her work.

The applique block I had to research to find out what it was called. The Vice President's block made sense to me since I'd been told that there was a family legend that says that we are related to a vice president! After much research, I discovered that the connection is very indirect. It's something like, a great great grandaunt married the uncle of a vice president. So he's not in my direct line!

This quilt has been exhibited at the 1999 Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara, CA and at the 2000 Pajarro Valley Quilt Association show in Santa Cruz, Ca. The quilt was published in a "Meetin' Place" article in the April/May 2009 issue of Quilter's Newsletter magazine, which is issue #409.

Scarlett has self-published a retail pattern for this quilt that is available through her website. The original pattern was done in QuiltPro (quilt design software) many years ago and now has been redone and updated in Electric Quilt 6.
